Why Everyone (Yes, Even You) Should Start a YouTube Channel
Have you ever thought about starting a YouTube channel? Maybe you’ve even tried once before… or maybe you’re still sitting on the fence wondering if it's too late or too hard.
Let me just say it straight:
If you've been thinking about it, this is your sign. You should start a YouTube channel. And yes, I mean you. 🙌
No matter your job, lifestyle, or tech skills, YouTube has something to offer you, whether that’s income, impact, or just plain fun. In this post, I’m going to share why I think nearly everyone should start a YouTube channel in 2026, and how you can benefit from joining the platform now (before it’s too late!).
Why Now Is the Best Time to Start
It’s 2026, and it has never been easier to start a YouTube channel. Truly.
Gone are the days when you needed a fancy camera setup and editing software to get going. Your smartphone is now your best tool. It has:
A great built-in microphone
Low-light capabilities
Smooth stabilization
Easy-to-use editing apps
Direct upload access to YouTube
So if the tech side of things has been holding you back, take this as your permission slip to let that excuse go. You’ve already got what you need.
“But Gillian, does everyone really need a YouTube channel?”
Okay, not literally everyone. I’m not suggesting we create a world where every person is uploading weekly vlogs. But if you’re reading this post? I think there’s a high chance YouTube could benefit you — whether you’re a professional, a blue collar worker, a stay-at-home parent, or simply someone with a message to share.
Let’s break down the reasons.
For Professionals: Level Up Your Career
If you’re a doctor, a lawyer, an accountant — or any kind of professional — YouTube can help you:
Build your personal brand
Attract more (and better-paying) clients
Grow your authority and visibility
Get booked for speaking gigs or media appearances
Land book deals or partnerships
It’s essentially the modern-day resume… only better, because people see your expertise in action.
And it’s so much cheaper and more fun than attending networking events, buying ads, or updating your LinkedIn profile for the tenth time.
Even unexpected professions are seeing results. Ever heard of Lauren the Mortician? She’s built an entire brand through YouTube — in a field you’d never expect. So yes, this applies to you, too.
For Non-Professionals: Build a Brand, Share Your Passion, or Escape the Rat Race
You don’t need a degree or fancy credentials to succeed on YouTube.
You can start from wherever you are — whether you're working a blue collar job, in between careers, or just figuring things out.
YouTube gives you:
A platform to share what you love
A way to start a personal brand or business
An escape from the 9-to-5 grind
A path to create something entirely your own
You can start a channel as an expert, or as a student, learning out loud and inviting others along the journey. Both paths work.
For Stay-at-Home Parents: Contribution + Creativity (on Your Own Terms)
Maybe you’re a stay-at-home mom or dad wondering, “Is YouTube for me?”
The answer is: maybe — depending on your goals.
If you’re looking to:
Contribute to your family’s finances
Save for retirement or vacations
Share a meaningful message
Explore a creative outlet
Build something that’s yours outside of parenting…
…then YouTube can be an amazing opportunity.
However — and this is important — if you’re currently laser-focused on being the best parent you can be and YouTube doesn’t directly align with that mission right now, it might not be the best fit. That’s okay. Seasons change.
Let’s Talk Benefits: What You Actually Get From a YouTube Channel
1. Income (Even from a Small Channel)
YouTube pays creators through ads, and while that might sound like pennies, it can add up quickly.
On average, you can earn around $10 per 1,000 views. So let’s say you post one video a week and get 5,000 views per video — that’s:
5,000 views × 4 videos/month = 20,000 views
Add in past videos that keep getting views = 100,000 views/month
That’s $1,000/month — from just one video per week
That’s real, recurring income. And it's only the beginning.
2. Opportunities You Can’t Predict
When you start showing up online with valuable content, doors open. Opportunities like:
New jobs or promotions
Book deals
Podcast invitations
Public speaking gigs
Brand sponsorships
Sales of your own products or services
All of these have happened for me — and they’ve happened for my students, too.
YouTube helps people find you. It builds trust at scale. You show up with value, and people show up for you in return.
3. Marketing on Autopilot
Once you upload a video, YouTube’s algorithm starts working for you — finding new viewers, growing your audience, and sharing your message while you sleep.
That means you don’t have to:
Post daily on social media
Run expensive ads
Rely on word-of-mouth only
Instead, you can build a long-term brand asset that continues working for you, long after you hit "publish."
4. Impact: Share Your Message With the World
Chances are, there’s something on your heart that you’d love to share.
A lesson you've learned…
A story you carry…
A message you think the world needs to hear…
YouTube is one of the most powerful tools to get that message out to the people who need it.
You can change lives, even with a tiny channel.
5. Fun + Fulfillment
Finally — and this is one of the most underrated benefits — YouTube is simply fun.
You get to create something
You get to connect with people
You get to challenge yourself and grow
You get a finished video at the end that you can be proud of
It’s creative, it’s satisfying, and it gives you a hobby that might just turn into a business.
But… What About AI?
Let’s address the elephant in the room: AI is here, and yes, it’s starting to make videos too.
So does that mean it's too late? That humans are going to get replaced?
I don’t think so. Not yet.
Here’s the deal: people still crave real, human connection. Most of us can tell the difference between a video made by a bot and one made by a real person — and we prefer the latter. You still have time to:
Start a channel
Establish your authentic voice
Build trust with your audience
But that window might not stay open forever. This is the time to carve out your space.
Is There Ever a Reason Not to Start?
Yes — two, actually.
If YouTube doesn’t align with your goals.
If you have no desire to make money, no message you want to share, and you're fully focused on another mission (like raising your kids), YouTube might not serve you right now. And that’s okay!If you try it and hate it.
If creating videos makes you miserable, it’s totally fine to stop. Not every great opportunity is great for you.
Bottom Line: If You’re YouTube-Curious, Now’s the Time
YouTube is one of the most accessible and impactful tools for building a personal brand, growing a business, and creating income online.
Even if you don’t want to become a “YouTuber.”
Even if you don’t want millions of subscribers.
Even if you just want to explore a creative outlet.
YouTube can help you achieve your goals — whatever they are.
