Stop Scrolling… Start Making Money Instead
Ever catch yourself reaching for your phone… again… without even thinking about it?
You open an app “just for a second”… and suddenly 20 minutes are gone. 😅
We’ve all been there.
But what if those tiny pockets of time—waiting in line, sitting on the couch, taking a break—could actually make you money instead of just wasting time?
Here’s a big shift to consider:
You don’t need to stop using your phone. You just need better ways to use it.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve explored quite a few simple ways you can use your phone to fill your time and actually make money.
And the best part?
Some of these are so easy, they almost feel like scrolling.
1. Task-Based / Gig Work (On-Demand)
First, let’s talk about the easiest place to get started making money with your phone.
These are the closest thing to “productive scrolling.”
You open your phone, complete a quick task, and move on with your day. It’s a great use of an idle minute and can easily add a few dollars to your bank account.
Just what are these tasks? Simple actions like answering questions, reviewing content, or labeling data.
Some popular platforms include:
Amazon Mechanical Turk
Often called “MTurk,” this is one of the largest microtask platforms. You’ll find thousands of small jobs (called HITs), such as categorizing images, verifying data, or answering short surveys. The pay per task is typically low, but the volume is high—so it works best if you learn how to quickly spot higher-paying tasks and work efficiently.Clickworker
Clickworker offers tasks like writing short text snippets, categorizing data, web research, and app testing. It tends to have slightly more structured opportunities than MTurk, and once you complete assessments, you may unlock higher-paying projects through their UHRS (Universal Human Relevance System).Remote Tasks
Remotasks focuses heavily on training AI models. Tasks include image annotation, transcription, and categorization. The key difference here is that you’ll often need to complete short training modules before accessing paid work—but once qualified, the pay can be more consistent than typical microtask sites.Respondent
This platform connects you with companies that will pay you for your opinions. These are not tiny tasks—they’re usually user interviews, focus groups, or product testing sessions. Payouts are significantly higher (often $20–$100+ per study), but you’ll need to qualify based on your background or experience.Prolific
Prolific is known for higher-quality, academic research studies. You’ll answer surveys or participate in experiments conducted by universities and researchers. Compared to other survey platforms, it tends to offer more reliable payouts and fairer compensation for your time.
Some tasks only take a few minutes. Others—especially research studies—pay more but require you to meet specific criteria.
And while this won’t replace a full-time income… it’s one of the easiest ways to start.
Because you don’t need to add anything new to your schedule - you can just replace what you were already doing with something that’s a lot more profitable!
2. Client Services
Now let’s take it a step further and think a little bigger than just doing tiny tasks… because of course, bigger, more valuable work pays even better.
Now, this category of ways to make money with your phone are basically mini-businesses. They don’t require a big audience or a complicated setup, but you do need to help people with something they don’t have time to do.
Here are a few ideas for easy businesses you can start + run with your phone:
Short-Form Content Creation
Creators are constantly putting out long videos and podcasts, but turning that content into short clips takes time. That’s a valuable service you can offer for them!
Community Management
Every active community needs someone keeping things running smoothly.
Replying to comments, keeping conversations going, and making people feel heard—it’s simple work (and easy to do from your phone!), but incredibly valuable.
Lead Response for Local Businesses
Small businesses miss messages all the time.
If you can respond quickly, ask a few questions, and guide people to the next step… you’re helping them make money—and they’ll pay for that.
3. Local Opportunities
Now… this is where things get interesting.
These next ideas aren’t 100% phone-based - they’ll require a little bit of “leg work” - but you can still do a lot of the work from your smartphone, which can replace your “scroll time” with something a lot more profitable. And then… you can get a little bit of exercise as well! 😅
Here are a few ideas for ways you can make money with your phone locally:
Mystery Shopping
I wasn’t sure at first, but… yes, this is a real thing! Basically, companies want to know what’s happening inside stores and… in their competitor stores, too.
So they pay people to go in, check prices or displays, and report back. It’s simple and actually pretty fun.
You can find these opportunities on apps like:
Field Agent — complete quick in-store audits and earn per task
Gigwalk — short gigs like checking displays or inventory
Observa — retail checks and product verification tasks
Marketplace Flipping
If you’re always spotting “great deals,” then you already have the skill for this.
Find underpriced items on online marketplaces (like Craigslist and FB Marketplace), buy them, and resell them for more. Your phone helps you spot, list, and sell.
Task-Based Local Gigs
People need help with all sorts of things every day: Moving, cleaning, errands, etc. And your phone can connect you to those opportunities!
Apps that connect you with these gigs include:
TaskRabbit — find local jobs like furniture assembly, cleaning, or moving help
Uber Eats — deliver food and earn on your own schedule
DoorDash — similar delivery gigs with flexible hours
Instacart — shop and deliver groceries for customers
4. Content Creation
Now let’s zoom out and think more long term. Everything we’ve talked about so far makes money in the moment.
But content creation is about building something that keeps working for you, even when you’re not on your phone.
Earn from Content
Every video or post you create has the potential to reach thousands of people, and over time, that attention can turn into income through ads, sponsorships, or platform payouts.
Sell Your Own Products
This is where things really shift. Instead of earning a just a few dollars here and there… you can build a whole business with your phone by creating something that you can sell again and again.
A course. Coaching. A digital product.
This is a huge step up from just doing little tasks for other companies (like with Amazon MTurk, for example), but it’s a legitimate way you can make money from your phone and replace your scroll time with something a lot more profitable.
It takes more intention and strategy than those easy little options… but not necessarily any more time. And the payoff can be much more substantial.
So… Where Should You Start?
Well, not everywhere! That’s the most important thing - and the mistake most people make. They try everything… and end up doing nothing.
Instead, pick the option that feels easiest to start.
If you want simple, start with micro tasks
If you want more income, try services
If you want long-term growth, start creating content
Just remember: you don’t need the perfect plan - you just need to get started!
The Real Shift
Ultimately, this isn’t really about your phone—it’s about your habits. You’re already spending the time, already picking it up throughout the day, so the real question is what happens next. Do you scroll? …or do you build something? Even a few minutes at a time, it adds up—and once you start seeing that, everything begins to change. So start today, not big or perfect, just with a different mindset.
